Dependency clauses (naargelang)

When discussing personalized diets, you often need to explain how one habit depends on or changes in proportion to another.

Depending on the Situation

To express "depending on whether" or "as" (in proportion), Dutch uses the subordinating conjunction naargelang. Because it is a subordinating conjunction, it sends the conjugated verb to the end of its clause.

Your nutrition should vary as you train more.
Je voeding zou moeten variëren, naargelang je meer traint.
The intake of this vitamin varies as you eat more plant-based.
De inname van deze vitamine varieert, naargelang je meer plantaardig eet.
They would change their meal plan as they cook plant-based more often.
Zij zouden hun voedingsschema veranderen, naargelang ze vaker plantaardig koken.

Starting with Naargelang

You can also place the naargelang clause at the very beginning of the sentence. When you do this, the entire subordinate clause acts as the first grammatical block. To maintain the Dutch verb-second (V2) rule, the main clause must start immediately with its verb, inverting the subject and verb.

As we eat more carbohydrates, we get more calories.
Naargelang we meer koolhydraten eten, krijgen we meer calorieën.
As you drink fewer calories, you lose weight faster.
Naargelang je minder calorieën drinkt, val je sneller af.
