Clauses of circumstance (nu)

Clauses of Circumstance with nu

To explain that an action is happening because of a new situation, use nu ("now that").

now that
nu

Nu is a subordinating conjunction. It introduces a dependent clause and pushes the conjugated verb to the very end of that clause.

If the main clause comes first, it uses standard word order and the nu clause simply attaches to the end.

Parenthood is exhausting, now that we sleep so little.
Het ouderschap is uitputtend, nu we zo weinig slapen.
We are giving the baby the pacifier, now that she is tired.
We geven de baby de speen, nu ze moe is.

To emphasize the circumstance, you can place the nu clause at the beginning of the sentence. The entire nu clause occupies the first position, so the main clause must start immediately with its verb to keep it in the required second position (inversion).

Now that the diaper is dirty, I am changing the baby.
Nu de luier vies is, verschoon ik de baby.
Now that we have a babysitter, we can relax.
Nu we een oppas hebben, kunnen we ontspannen.
