Discussing Literature
When reviewing a book or analyzing literature, you will often start by discussing the summary (de samenvatting) and the plot (de plot).
| I have read the summary of the story. | Ik heb de samenvatting van het verhaal gelezen. |
| The plot of this novel is very fascinating. | De plot van deze roman is heel boeiend. |
Setting a Minimum with "Tenminste"
To introduce a baseline, a minimum amount, or a mitigating thought, use the adverb tenminste (at least / at any rate).
| The book is good, at least for these readers. | Het boek is goed, tenminste voor deze lezers. |
| I have found at least one good argument. | Ik heb tenminste één goed argument gevonden. |
Qualifying Statements with "Althans"
While analyzing the structure (de opbouw) of a story or determining whether it is compelling (meeslepend), you may want to refine a statement. The adverb althans also translates to "at least" (or "that is to say"), but it is used specifically to clarify, restrict, or slightly backtrack on a preceding claim.
| The story is compelling, at least in the beginning. | Het verhaal is meeslepend, althans in het begin. |
| The readers have understood the plot, at least, they claim to. | De lezers hebben de plot begrepen, althans, dat beweren ze. |
Analyzing Style and Plot Twists
To build a convincing (overtuigend) argument, you might focus your critique on the author's writing style (de schrijfstijl) or an unexpected twist (de wending) in the narrative.
| The writing style of the author is quite tricky. | De schrijfstijl van de auteur is tamelijk lastig. |
| That plot has an unexpected twist. | Die plot heeft een onverwachte wending. |
| Your first argument is very convincing. | Jouw eerste argument is erg overtuigend. |
Summarizing with "Kortom"
After laying out your arguments, you can wrap up your thoughts using kortom (in short). It is typically placed at the very beginning of a concluding sentence and is followed by a comma. Because it sits outside the main clause, the word order of the sentence that follows remains standard (subject-verb).
| In short, the writing style is rather complicated. | Kortom, de schrijfstijl is nogal ingewikkeld. |
| In short, the structure of the story is convincing. | Kortom, de opbouw van het verhaal is overtuigend. |
