Avoiding double 'er' (daar)

The Double 'Er' Clash

When organizing an outdoor campsite, you will use er a lot. It acts as an existential subject (meaning "there is" or "there are") and as an unstressed locational adverb (meaning "there").

But what happens when you need to say "There is a sleeping bag there"? Dutch grammar has a strict constraint: you cannot put two er*s next to each other, nor can they coexist in the same clause. Saying *er er is always incorrect.

The Solution: Substitute with Daar

To avoid this awkward double er sequence, you have two choices: delete the locational er entirely if the location is already obvious from context (er-deletie), or substitute the second er with daar to specify the spot.

Notice how the existential er introduces the subject, while the substituted daar provides the location.

There is a good sleeping bag lying there.
Er ligt daar een goede slaapzak.
Are there sheltered spots there for the equipment?
Zijn er daar beschutte plekken voor de uitrusting?
It appears from the map that there is a flat surface there.
Uit de plattegrond blijkt dat er daar een vlakke ondergrond is.

Prepositional 'Er' Substitution

This same clash happens when using prepositions. If a bag has tent pegs "in it", you would normally use the pronominal adverb erin. But if you combine that with an existential er ("There are three tent pegs in it"), you hit another double er collision.

Again, the fix is identical: upgrade the prepositional er to daar, splitting it around the middle field as daar ... in or daar ... aan.

There are three tent pegs in there.
Er zitten daar drie haringen in.
Are there guy ropes attached there?
Zitten er daar scheerlijnen aan?

Pitching the Perfect Sentence

Managing the middle field in Dutch is all about avoiding repetition while prioritizing clarity. By upgrading a second er into a daar, you ensure your sentences remain grammatically correct and perfectly clear.

We put the camping stove here, because there is a flat surface there.
Wij zetten het kooktoestel hier, want er is daar een vlakke ondergrond.
There is equipment lying there to inflate everything.
Er ligt daar uitrusting om alles op te blazen.
