Questions & Answers about To je kruh.
How can I tell what gender kruh is?
Look at the last letter. Because kruh ends in a consonant (the letter h), it is a regular masculine noun. This is the standard rule for finding masculine nouns in Croatian.
Why is kruh in the nominative case here?
The nominative case is the basic dictionary form of a word. We use it here because sentences with the verb je (is) simply equate one thing to another. The word for the thing being identified stays in the nominative.
If kruh is masculine, why do we use the neuter word to for "that"?
When you are just pointing at something and introducing it by saying "That is a...", you always use the generic neuter pronoun to. You only need to match the masculine gender if you are using "that" to describe a specific noun, like saying "that bread is good" (taj kruh je dobar).
Why isn't there a word for "some" or "the" before kruh?
Croatian does not have articles like "a", "an", or "the". The single word kruh can mean "bread", "some bread", or "the bread" depending entirely on what makes sense in the context of your conversation.
