Asking "What is that?"

To ask about objects, use the question word što (what) and the demonstrative pronoun to (that / this). The short verb je (is) takes the second position in the sentence.

Noun genders

Every Croatian noun is masculine, feminine, or neuter. You can usually tell a noun's gender by looking at its last letter in its dictionary form (the nominative singular).

Masculine nouns (consonants)

Nouns ending in a consonant are generally masculine. This is often called a "zero ending" (-Ø) because it lacks a final vowel.

That is a table.
To je stol.
Where is the window?
Gdje je prozor?

Feminine nouns (-a)

Nouns ending in -a are almost always feminine.

That is a book.
To je knjiga.
I am here, and where is the house?
Ja sam ovdje, a gdje je kuća?

Neuter nouns (-o / -e)

Nouns ending in -o or -e are generally neuter.

That is milk.
To je mlijeko.
The sea is there.
More je tamo.
