Questions & Answers about A gdje si ti?
Why does this sentence use A for "and" instead of I?
In Croatian, a is a conjunction used to show a slight contrast or to shift the focus to a new subject, much like saying "And what about you?" in English. You would use i when you are simply adding similar things together without contrast.
I thought the short verb si had to be in the second position. Isn't it in the third position here?
It looks like it, but short conjunctions at the start of a sentence like a do not count as the first position for the second-position rule. The question word gdje is treated as the first "real" word, so the short verb si correctly anchors right after it.
Since Croatian drops subject pronouns, could I just say A gdje si?
Yes! A gdje si? is perfectly correct and very common. Because the specific verb form si already means "you are", the subject pronoun ti is not strictly necessary to understand the sentence.
So why is the word ti included at the end?
Including the optional pronoun ti gives the sentence extra emphasis. It shifts the feeling from a simple "Where are you?" to "And where are you?" This is exactly how you would ask the question back to someone after telling them where you are.
