Questions & Answers about Ptica sjedi među granama u krošnji.

Why does the preposition među trigger the Instrumental case here with granama?
The preposition među (among/between) is a two-way preposition. It takes the Accusative case when describing motion towards a destination, but the Instrumental case when describing a static location. Since the bird is simply sitting in place, we use the Instrumental plural granama.
We see two different cases used for static location here (granama and krošnji). Why is that?
The case depends entirely on the preposition used. While both phrases describe a stationary position, među requires the Instrumental case for static locations, whereas the preposition u (in) requires the Locative case. This is why we have među granama (Instrumental) but u krošnji (Locative).
Is krošnja just a general word for tree?
krošnja refers specifically to the crown, canopy, or leafy top part of a tree. While in English you might simply say a bird is "in the tree," Croatian speakers frequently use u krošnji to paint a more precise picture of a bird situated up among the leaves.
Is sjedi an imperfective or perfective verb here?
It is imperfective. The infinitive is sjediti, which describes the continuous state of sitting. At the B2 level, it is important not to confuse it with the perfective verb sjesti (to sit down), which describes the completed physical action of moving into a seated position.
