Questions & Answers about Osim što je meso masno, ima previše soli.
Why do we use osim što here instead of just osim?
Osim is a preposition meaning 'except' or 'besides,' and it must be followed by a noun or pronoun in the genitive case. Because we are connecting a full clause with its own verb (je meso masno), we have to use the conjunction osim što ('aside from the fact that' or 'except that').
Why is the word for salt soli in this sentence?
The adverb previše (too much) requires the noun that follows it to be in the genitive case. The word sol is a feminine noun that ends in a consonant (an i-declension noun), so its genitive singular form takes an -i ending, making it soli.
What is the subject of ima in the second half of the sentence?
The implied subject is meso (meat), so it translates directly as 'it has too much salt.' However, ima is also frequently used as an impersonal verb meaning 'there is.' Both interpretations ('it has' or 'there is') work perfectly here and take the exact same form.
Why does the adjective masno end in -o?
