Questions & Answers about Na izlasku smo gledali zvijezde.
Doesn't izlazak usually mean an exit or the sunrise?
It can! For example, izlazak sunca means sunrise. However, in everyday spoken Croatian, izlazak is also the standard word used for a night out with friends or a romantic date.
Why does the word izlazak lose its second 'a' to become izlasku?
This is a classic example of the 'fleeting a' (nepostojano a). When adding a case ending like the locative -u, that final a from the base word drops out to make pronunciation smoother, giving us izlasku instead of 'izlazaku'.
Why do we use the preposition na instead of u for 'on a date'?
In Croatian, na is typically used for events, gatherings, and activities. Just as you would say na sastanku (at a meeting) or na zabavi (at a party), you use na for being on a date or night out.
Why did we use the verb gledali (watched) rather than vidjeli (saw)?
Gledali is an imperfective verb, which means it describes an ongoing or continuous action. Since watching the stars is an activity that happens over a period of time, we use gledali. If you used vidjeli (perfective), it would mean you simply spotted or caught sight of them.
