Questions & Answers about Ispod kotla nema pepela.
What is the dictionary (nominative) form of kotla, and how did it get to this form?
The dictionary form is kotao (cauldron). When we add case endings to nouns like this, two things happen: the a drops out (this is known as a "fleeting a"), and the final o reverts back to its historical l. Finally, we add the genitive ending -a, resulting in kotla.
Why is kotla in the genitive case in the first place?
It follows the preposition ispod (under). In Croatian, ispod always requires the noun that comes immediately after it to be in the genitive case.
How does the word for ash (pepeo) become pepela?
Just like kotao, the masculine noun pepeo ends in an o that originally used to be an l. When we add a case suffix to it, that l reappears. We attach the genitive ending -a, making it pepela. Notice that unlike kotao, pepeo doesn't have a "fleeting a" that drops out.
Why must pepela also be in the genitive case here?
It is triggered by the word nema (there is no / there isn't). In Croatian, whenever you use nema to state that something is missing or does not exist, the absent thing must take the genitive case.
