Questions & Answers about Noćna smjena traje od deset navečer do šest ujutro.
The lesson says od and do take the genitive case. Why don't the numbers deset and šest have genitive endings here?
In Croatian, numbers from five onwards (like šest and deset) are indeclinable, meaning they do not change their form to match a case. Even though the prepositions od and do require the genitive, these numbers stay exactly the same.
Why do we use navečer and ujutro here instead of the nouns večer (evening) and jutro (morning)?
Navečer and ujutro are adverbs that specifically mean 'in the evening' and 'in the morning'. When telling time, using these adverbs is the standard and most natural way to specify the part of the day without needing to add extra prepositions.
The English translation implies 'ten o'clock', but the Croatian sentence just says deset navečer. Is it normal to drop the word for 'o'clock'?
Yes! You could technically say deset sati navečer (ten hours in the evening), but it is very common in everyday Croatian to drop the word sati (hours/o'clock) when the context of time is obvious.
How is noćna related to the word for night (noć)?
