Questions & Answers about Kome si dao poklon?
Why do we use Kome instead of Tko at the beginning of this sentence?
Tko means "who" (the subject), but here we are asking "to whom" the gift was given. The verb dati (to give) requires the dative case for the recipient. Kome is the dative form of tko.
Why is the auxiliary verb si placed exactly here?
Si is an enclitic (a "weak" word without its own stress) that helps form the past tense. Croatian grammar dictates that enclitics must generally take the second position in a clause. Since Kome is the first word, si has to come right after it.
Does the word dao indicate the gender of the person asking or the person being asked?
Poklon is the direct object being given. Why hasn't its ending changed?
As a direct object, poklon is in the accusative case. However, because it is a masculine noun that represents an inanimate object (not a person or animal), its accusative form looks identical to its nominative (dictionary) form.
