Questions & Answers about Zašto biraš te naočale?
Why do we use te instead of ove or one for "those"?
In Croatian, distance matters for demonstrative pronouns. You use ove (these) for things near the speaker, te (those) for things near the listener, and one (those over there) for things far from both of you. Since the listener is the one currently looking at or holding the glasses, they are near the listener, so we use a form of taj (which becomes te here).
What case is te naočale in?
It is in the accusative case because it is the direct object of the action—it is the thing being chosen. For feminine plural words, the accusative form looks exactly the same as the nominative (the basic dictionary form), which is why it remains te naočale.
Is naočale a singular or plural word?
It is plural! Just like the word "glasses" in English, naočale is a word that only exists in the plural form. It is treated as a feminine plural noun, which is why it must be paired with the feminine plural pronoun te.
Why is the verb translated as "are you choosing" instead of "do you choose"?
Croatian doesn't have a separate "-ing" continuous tense like English does. The present tense verb biraš (from the infinitive birati) covers both "you choose" and "you are choosing". In this situation, the action is happening right now, so "are you choosing" is the most natural English translation.
