Questions & Answers about Zašto se ne grlite?
Why is the word se used here if no one is doing something to themselves?
In Croatian, se isn't just used for actions you do to yourself. It is also used when two or more people do an action to each other (called reciprocal use). In this sentence, se turns the verb into "hug each other".
Why does se come before ne? Could I say "Zašto ne se grlite?"
No, you cannot change the order. The word se is a small, unstressed word (a clitic) that demands the second position in the sentence, right after Zašto. Meanwhile, the negative word ne is tightly bound to its verb and must stay directly in front of grlite.
How do we know who is supposed to be hugging if there's no word for "you" in the sentence?
The ending of the verb tells us. The verb grlite ends in -ite, which is the present tense ending for vi (you, plural or formal). In Croatian, pronoun subjects like vi are usually dropped unless you need to add special emphasis.
Does ne grlite mean "don't you hug" or "aren't you hugging"?
It can mean both! Croatian doesn't have a separate "-ing" tense for actions happening right now like English does. The present tense verb grlite covers both general habits ("don't you hug") and actions happening at this very moment ("aren't you hugging"). The context tells you which one it is.
