Questions & Answers about Moram skrenuti lijevo.
Why isn't there a word for "I" in this sentence?
In Croatian, the ending of the verb tells you who is doing the action. The -m at the end of moram already means "I have to" or "I must", so you don't need to add the word ja (I) unless you really want to emphasize it.
Why does the second verb, skrenuti, end in -ti?
Because it follows moram (I have to). Just like in English where we say "I have to turn", the second verb stays in its basic dictionary form, called the infinitive. In Croatian, infinitives usually end in -ti or -ći.
Is lijevo a neuter adjective here?
Not in this sentence! Here, lijevo acts as an adverb meaning "to the left." Direction words in Croatian often end in -o, such as desno (to the right) and ravno (straight ahead). Because it is an adverb, it never changes its ending.
Does moram mean "must" or "have to"?
It means both. Croatian doesn't make a strict difference between "must" and "have to" the way English does. Moram covers both meanings perfectly.
