Onda je počeo film.

Questions & Answers about Onda je počeo film.

Why is the auxiliary verb je separated from the main verb počeo?
In the Croatian past tense, the auxiliary verb je is an enclitic (a short, unstressed word). Enclitics have a strict rule: they must go in the second position of the sentence. Since the adverb Onda (Then) takes the first position, je must come immediately after it, temporarily separating it from the main verb počeo.
Since past tense verbs are called "l-participles", why is there no l in počeo?
The l is actually hiding! If the subject were feminine, the verb would be počela, where you can clearly see the l. But in the masculine singular form, that l falls at the very end of the word. In Croatian, an l at the end of a word almost always changes into an o, which is why we say počeo instead of počel.
Why do we use the masculine form počeo here?
In the past tense, the l-participle must agree with the subject in gender and number. The subject of this sentence is film, which is a masculine noun. Therefore, the verb takes the masculine singular ending.
Is it normal to put the subject (film) at the very end of the sentence?
Yes! Because Croatian relies on word endings and strict enclitic rules to organize a sentence, the overall word order is quite flexible. While you could absolutely say Onda je film počeo, putting film at the end sounds very natural here. It lets the speaker keep the two parts of the past tense (je počeo) closer together.
