Questions & Answers about Kamo sada ideš?
Why does this sentence use kamo instead of gdje for 'where'?
In Croatian, there is a strict difference between location and destination. Gdje asks about your current static location (where you are). Because ići (to go) is a verb of motion that involves moving towards a destination, we must use the word kamo (where to).
How do we know who is going if there is no word for 'you' in the sentence?
The verb ideš ends in -š, which is the standard present tense ending for the 'you' (singular) form. The dictionary form of this verb is ići (to go). Croatian usually drops pronouns like ti (you) because the verb ending already tells us who is doing the action.
Is ideš used for both 'you go' and 'you are going'?
Yes! Croatian does not have a separate continuous tense like English does. Ideš translates to both 'you go' and 'you are going'. In this sentence, the word sada (now) makes it completely obvious that the motion is happening right now.
Can I change the word order and say Kamo ideš sada?
Yes, Croatian word order is quite flexible. Kamo ideš sada? is also perfectly correct and means exactly the same thing. Just remember that question words like Kamo generally need to stay at the very beginning of the sentence.
