In Croatian, prefixes attach to the front of verbs to change their meaning entirely. To talk about rivalries and practical jokes, two expressive prefixes are especially useful: nad- and pod-.
| My rival prepares only traps. | Moj suparnik priprema samo zamke. |
The Prefix nad- (Surpassing)
The prefix nad- literally means "over" or "above." When attached to a verb, it indicates surpassing someone or doing something better than them, much like the English prefix "out-".
- mudriti (to philosophize) → nadmudriti (to outsmart)
- igrati (to play) → nadigrati (to outplay)
| I want to outsmart him using a prank. | Želim ga nadmudriti pomoću smicalice. |
| Revenge is ready and we will outplay them. | Osveta je spremna i nadigrat ćemo ih. |
The Prefix pod- (Stealth and Subversion)
The prefix pod- literally means "under." In the context of a rivalry, it takes on a figurative meaning: doing something underhandedly or sneakily.
- metnuti (to put) → podmetnuti (to plant secretly)
- valiti (to roll) → podvaliti (to play a trick)
- badati (to poke) → podbadati (to provoke stealthily)
| She planted a fake letter for the rival. | Suparniku je podmetnula lažno pismo. |
| They constantly provoke each other with pranks. | Oni se stalno podbadaju smicalicama. |
| I played a trick on him and planted a spider in his pocket. | Podvalio sam mu i podmetnuo pauka u džep. |
Combining Forces
Use these prefixes to describe elaborate revenge (osveta) against a naive (naivan) target:
| Marko played a trick on me and outsmarted me yesterday. | Marko mi je podvalio i nadmudrio me jučer. |
| Do not provoke me because I want revenge! | Nemoj me podbadati jer želim osvetu! |
