Time Clauses with "dok ne" (Until)
To say until an event happens, Croatian pairs dok with the particle ne. The ne in this construction does not make the verb negative; it simply marks the endpoint of the time period.
| We will wait here until the rain stops. | Čekat ćemo ovdje dok kiša ne prestane. |
| You must be patient until the pain stops. | Moraš biti strpljiv dok bol ne prestane. |
Expressing Patience and Endurance
This structure is very common when talking about waiting, enduring, or staying in a specific state until a condition is met.
| I will stay awake until she arrives. | Ostat ću budan dok ona ne dođe. |
| She will stay nervous until she finds out the truth. | Ostat će nervozna dok ne sazna istinu. |
| Will you hold out until help arrives? | Hoćeš li izdržati dok ne dođe pomoć? |
With reflexive verbs like smiriti se (to calm down), standard enclitic rules apply. The reflexive pronoun se is placed early in the clause, often immediately following dok.
| No one will speak until he calms down. | Nitko neće govoriti dok se on ne smiri. |
Negative Main Clauses
When the main clause is also negative, both halves of the sentence contain a negative word. The meaning remains straightforward: "not X, until Y happens."
| We won't eat anything until the guests arrive. | Nećemo ništa jesti dok gosti ne dođu. |
