When traveling, sometimes things go wrong before you even arrive. To talk about actions that had already happened before another point in the past, use the pluperfect tense (Pluskvamperfekt).
Forming the Pluperfect
The pluperfect is formed by combining the past tense of biti (to be) with the l-participle of your main verb. Because the past tense of biti consists of two parts itself, the pluperfect uses three words in total:
- The auxiliary verb (e.g., sam, je, su)
- The l-participle of biti (e.g., bio, bili)
- The l-participle of the main verb (e.g., propustio, poletio)
Auxiliary verbs are enclitics and must take the second position in a clause. If you drop the subject pronoun, the sentence starts with the l-participle of biti.
| I had missed the connection. | Bio sam propustio presjedanje. |
If you start the sentence with a subject noun like avion (airplane), the auxiliary verb (je) comes immediately after it to take the second position, followed by the two l-participles.
| The plane had taken off before the departure of the train. | Avion je bio poletio prije polaska vlaka. |
Agreement in Gender and Number
Since the pluperfect uses two l-participles, both must agree with the subject in gender and number.
If the subject is masculine plural, use bili and the plural main verb participle. Note how object pronouns like nas (us) also cluster with the auxiliary in the second position.
| They had informed us about the delay over the loudspeaker. | Bili su nas obavijestili o kašnjenju preko razglasa. |
| We had landed before the connection. | Bili smo sletjeli prije presjedanja. |
If a singular masculine event like a breakdown (kvar) had occurred, you use je bio nastao.
| A breakdown had occurred before our departure. | Kvar je bio nastao prije našeg polaska. |
Establishing a Timeline
The pluperfect clarifies the timeline of past events. It is often paired with words like već (already) or used right alongside the regular past tense to show exactly what happened first.
| Boarding had already finished. | Ukrcaj je već bio završio. |
| The plane had already landed when they informed us over the PA system. | Avion je već bio sletio kad su nas obavijestili preko razglasa. |
