The dative of detriment

The Dative of Detriment

When complaining about unexpected problems or actions that negatively affect you, Croatian uses a structure often called the "dative of detriment" (or ethical dative). This frames an event as happening to someone's disadvantage, translating roughly to the English phrasing "on me" or "on us" (as in, "My car broke down on me").

To use it, insert a short-form dative pronoun (mi, ti, mu, joj, nam, vam, im) into the sentence. Like all clitics, it sits in the second position of the clause, often forming a cluster with other short words like auxiliary verbs.

The rats chewed up all the cables in the attic on me.
Štakori su mi izgrizli sve kabele na tavanu.

Pests and Property Damage

This structure is perfectly suited for venting about property damage and infestations. The dative pronoun clearly identifies who is suffering the consequences of the pests.

The mice chewed through the beams under the roof on her.
Miševi su joj progrizli grede ispod krova.
The cockroaches are multiplying quickly in the kitchen on us.
Žohari nam se brzo množe u kuhinji.

Match the dative pronoun to the person affected by the misfortune:

The moth chewed up that new coat on him.
Moljac mu je izgrizao onaj novi kaput.
Those pests destroyed all the beams on the roof on you.
Te štetočine su vam uništile sve grede na krovu.

You can combine the dative of detriment with other elements to tell a full story of your household misfortune:

I found their nest, but the moths already chewed up the clothes on me.
Pronašao sam njihovo gnijezdo, ali moljci su mi već izgrizli odjeću.
