The Aorist Tense
In modern everyday Croatian, you will almost exclusively use the standard past tense (the perfect) to talk about the past. However, you will often encounter the aorist tense in literature, historical chronicles, fairy tales, and sometimes journalism. It is a simple, one-word past tense built from perfective verbs, used to describe actions that were completed quickly and completely in the past.
Since you mostly need to recognize the aorist rather than speak it, focus on spotting its distinctive endings. The most common markers are:
- -e or -i for he/she/it (e.g., pade
- fell, uništi
- destroyed)
- fell, uništi
- -še for they (e.g., rekoše
- they said, pobjegoše
- they fled)
- they said, pobjegoše
- -h or -smo for I / we (e.g., odoh
- I left, izgubismo
- we lost)
- I left, izgubismo
Let's look at how these endings create a dramatic, fast-paced tone in a historical recount about an empire (carstvo):
| The great empire suddenly fell, and they fled to the mountains. | Veliko carstvo odjednom pade, a oni pobjegoše u planine. |
| They said that the conquerors were stronger and faster than us. | Rekoše da su osvajači jači i brži od nas. |
Everyday Survivals: "Odoh!"
While mostly literary, a few aorist forms survive in modern conversational slang as fixed phrases. The most common is odoh (from otići). If someone says "Odoh ja!", they are essentially saying "I'm out of here!" or "I'm leaving right now!"—using the aorist to dramatically emphasize that their departure is as good as done.
| The ruler threw the shield and said: "I am leaving!" | Vladar baci štit i reče: „Odoh ja!” |
A Dramatic Collapse
When reading epic stories about a conqueror (osvajač) or the ruin of an army (vojska), the aorist moves the action along swiftly. Notice how the verbs in the examples below end in -še for groups of people, and -e or -i for singular subjects.
| Everyone fell into despair when the conqueror destroyed that wall. | Svi padoše u očaj kad osvajač uništi onaj zid. |
| The whole empire became dust, and the flag burned down. | Cijelo carstvo postade prah, a zastava izgorje. |
By recognizing these endings, you will be able to comfortably read classic Croatian literature and appreciate the dramatic flair of historical storytelling.
