The Prefix naj-
To form a superlative adjective (words like "biggest," "oldest," or "most famous"), attach the prefix naj- directly to the comparative form. For example, veći (bigger) becomes najveći (the biggest).
| This is the biggest castle in the city. | Ovo je najveći dvorac u gradu. |
| Where is the biggest monument? | Gdje je najveći spomenik? |
Adjective Agreement
Because superlatives are just modified adjectives, they still must agree with the noun they describe in gender, number, and case.
Notice how the ending changes to match a feminine accusative noun (najstariju):
| Every tourist wants to see the oldest tower. | Svaki turist želi vidjeti najstariju kulu. |
A masculine nominative noun (najljepši):
| The tower has the most beautiful view. | Kula ima najljepši pogled. |
And a feminine nominative noun (najskuplja):
| Coffee in the square is the most expensive. | Kava na trgu je najskuplja. |
Irregular Comparatives and Other Cases
The naj- prefix works identically with irregular comparatives. For example, dobar (good) becomes bolji (better), which gives us najbolji (the best).
| Here is the best view of the sea. | Ovdje je najbolji pogled na more. |
Like all adjectives, superlatives decline across all cases, such as the instrumental (najstarijim):
| We arrived with the oldest guide. | Došli smo s najstarijim vodičem. |
