Splitting Noun Phrases
Enclitics (short verbs and pronouns) sit in the "second position" of a sentence. Normally, a noun and its adjective stay together in the first position.
To add stylistic flair—like when giving high praise or an impassioned speech—you can split the noun phrase. By putting the adjective in the first position, the enclitic slips into the second position, separating the adjective from its noun.
| Those guests accomplished an unprecedented feat. | Neviđen su podvig ti gosti ostvarili. |
| You had a historic vision, therefore you succeeded. | Povijesnu ste viziju imali, stoga ste uspjeli. |
Multiple enclitics, like a short pronoun and a short verb, wedge together between the adjective and the noun while maintaining their strict internal order.
| He read us an extraordinary speech. | Izvanredan nam je govor pročitao. |
While not strictly required for casual communication, this structure instantly elevates your Croatian.
| They came up with a flawless plan. | Besprijekoran su plan smislili. |
| We became real heroes, which is an unprecedented success. | Pravi smo heroji postali, što je neviđen uspjeh. |
| Our hero showed a clear vision. | Jasnu je viziju pokazao naš heroj. |
