Relative clauses of place (gdje)

Using "Gdje" to Connect Sentences

You likely already know gdje as the question word for "where." Just like in English, you can use gdje as a relative pronoun to link two clauses together. It connects a specific location to the event that happens there.

This is the location where we found the hidden entrance.
Ovo je lokacija gdje smo našli skriveni ulaz.
They went to a remote location where nobody lives.
Otišli su na zabačenu lokaciju gdje nitko ne živi.

Describing Abandoned Spaces

When talking about urban exploration, the main clause establishes the setting (like an abandoned building or a ruin), and the gdje clause describes the atmosphere or action inside it.

She entered the abandoned hospital alone where it is dark.
Sama je ušla u napuštenu bolnicu gdje je mračno.
We explore abandoned places where old buildings decay.
Istražujemo napuštena mjesta gdje stare zgrade propadaju.
I do not want to live in a ruin where everything decays.
Ne želim živjeti u ruševini gdje sve propada.

Discoveries and Explorers

No matter what grammatical case the location is in—whether it is the subject, the object, or part of a prepositional phrase—the relative pronoun gdje remains unchanged.

Our best discovery is the ruin where we found gold.
Naše najbolje otkriće je ruševina gdje smo našli zlato.
The brave explorer entered the eerie cave where a monster hides.
Hrabri istraživač ušao je u sablasnu špilju gdje se skriva čudovište.
We found an eerie but preserved hotel where the guests left their luggage.
Našli smo sablastan, ali očuvan hotel gdje su gosti ostavili prtljagu.
