The Basics of Fishing
To describe your new outdoor hobby, you will need the verb pecati (to fish).
| My grandfather and I like to fish on the lake. | Moj djed i ja volimo pecati na jezeru. |
Of course, you cannot fish without the right equipment. The word for a hook is the feminine noun udica.
| Careful, this hook is sharp. | Pazi, ova udica je oštra. |
You will also need bait, which is the masculine noun mamac. When you want to say you are doing something "with" an object, you use the preposition s (or sa) followed by the instrumental case. For masculine nouns ending in -c, the instrumental ending is -em, making it s mamcem.
| The hook with bait must fall into the water. | Udica s mamcem mora pasti u vodu. |
Making a Catch
When your fishing trip is successful, you will bring home a catch, which is the masculine noun ulov.
| Your catch today is really impressive. | Tvoj današnji ulov je stvarno impresivan. |
The related verb is uloviti (to catch). In Croatian, there is a difference between the ongoing process of fishing and the completed action of actually catching a fish. You use pecati for the activity itself, but uloviti for a successful, completed result.
| As soon as I catch a fish, we are going home. | Čim ulovim ribu, idemo doma. |
Essential Gear
Let's look at a few more tools you will use by the water. The word for fishing line is the feminine noun struna.
| This thin fishing line can break. | Ova tanka struna može puknuti. |
You attach a bobber, the masculine noun plovak, to see when a fish bites.
| As soon as the bobber goes down, you must pull. | Čim plovak krene dolje, moraš vući. |
To get your line into the water, you need the verb zabaciti (to cast).
| He can cast the hook very far. | On može jako daleko zabaciti udicu. |
You also use a reel, the feminine noun rola, to manage your line.
| My new reel is very expensive. | Moja nova rola je vrlo skupa. |
The Prize
One of the most popular river fish you might catch is the trout, known as the feminine noun pastrva.
Like other feminine nouns ending in -a, it changes its ending to -u when it becomes the direct object of a sentence (the accusative case). So, if you order or catch a trout, it becomes pastrvu.
| I ordered trout with lemon for dinner. | Naručio sam pastrvu s limunom za večeru. |
