Multiplicative Adjectives
To express proportional scaling—such as "double," "triple," or "multiple"—Croatian adds the suffix -struk to a number prefix.
For example, combining the prefix for two (dvo-) with -struk creates dvostruk (double). These function as standard adjectives and must agree with the noun they modify in gender, number, and case.
| Your new stake must be double. | Vaš novi ulog mora biti dvostruk. |
| Every casino offers a double payout. | Svaki kasino nudi dvostruku isplatu. |
You can also combine this suffix with prefixes like više- (more) to create adjectives such as višestruk (multiple).
| In all of that, the multiple profit is unbelievable. | U svemu tome, višestruka dobit je nevjerojatna. |
| Does every gambler expect a multiple payout on the roulette? | Zar svaki kockar očekuje višestruku isplatu na ruletu? |
Multiplicative Adverbs
When you need to describe how an action is performed—such as increasing a bet "twofold" or winning "three times as much"—use the adverbial form, which always ends in -struko (e.g., dvostruko, trostruko).
Because they are adverbs, these forms never change their endings to match gender or number.
| They increased the stake twofold. | Povećali su ulog dvostruko. |
| The gambler loses money unless he increases the stake twofold. | Kockar gubi novac osim ako poveća ulog dvostruko. |
| She puts all the chips on red and wins three times as much. | Ona stavi sve žetone na crveno i dobije trostruko. |
These adverbs can also be placed directly before comparative adjectives to express a precisely scaled difference, such as a loss being "three times smaller."
| This move brought a three times smaller loss. | Ovaj potez je donio trostruko manji gubitak. |
