Hundreds
To form exact hundreds in Croatian, attach the suffix -sto to the base number:
- 200: dvjesto
- 300: tristo
- 400: četiristo
- 500: petsto
- 600: šeststo
- 700: sedamsto
Note: You can also express hundreds using two words (e.g., dvije stotine), but these single-word forms are extremely common.
| This old building is two hundred years old. | Ova stara zgrada ima dvjesto godina. |
When reading data, you will often encounter the verb iznositi (to amount to) alongside words like anketa (survey).
| The survey showed that the price amounts to three hundred. | Anketa je pokazala da cijena iznosi tristo. |
Thousands and Millions
The word for one thousand is tisuću, and one million is milijun. To combine large quantities, state the numbers in descending order, just as in English.
| The library has one thousand two hundred books. | Knjižnica ima tisuću dvjesto knjiga. |
When counting hundreds of thousands, the word for thousand changes to tisuća. This is essential when discussing a city's stanovništvo (population).
| The city's population amounts to four hundred thousand. | Stanovništvo grada iznosi četiristo tisuća. |
| The city has one million three hundred thousand inhabitants. | Grad ima milijun tristo tisuća stanovnika. |
Proportions and Statistics
You will frequently apply these large numbers to demographic and statistical concepts, such as a postotak (percentage) or a prosjek (average).
| There are three hundred people here, that is a large percentage. | Ovdje je tristo ljudi, to je velik postotak. |
| They worked four hundred hours, that is a good average. | Radili su četiristo sati, to je dobar prosjek. |
