Indefinite Pronouns: "Netko" and "Nešto"
In Croatian, create indefinite pronouns by adding the prefix ne- to basic question words. Tko (who) becomes netko (someone), and što (what) becomes nešto (something). Use these when the exact identity of a person or object is unknown.
| Someone is knocking on the door. | Netko kuca na vrata. |
| Something happened in the city. | Nešto se dogodilo u gradu. |
| I see something in the office. | Vidim nešto u uredu. |
Indefinite Adjectives: "Neki"
When you want to say "some" or "a certain" to describe a specific noun, use neki. Because it behaves like an adjective, it changes form to agree with the noun's gender, number, and case.
| There is some man in front of the door. | Ispred vrata je neki čovjek. |
| I found some old letters. | Našao sam neka stara pisma. |
Location vs. Motion: "Negdje" and "Nekamo"
Croatian adverbs for "where" also take the ne- prefix. Remember to distinguish between static location and destination:
- Use negdje (somewhere) for static locations.
- Use nekamo (to somewhere) when there is motion or travel toward a destination.
| I lost my wallet somewhere. | Negdje sam izgubio svoj novčanik. |
| We must go somewhere for the weekend. | Moramo ići nekamo za vikend. |
| Are they traveling somewhere tomorrow? | Putuju li sutra nekamo? |
