Suggesting Joint Actions ("Let's...")
To propose an activity to a group—like saying "let's go" or "let's celebrate"—Croatian uses the first-person plural ("we") imperative.
To build this command, take the "they" form of the present tense and drop the final -u or -e:
- If the stem ends in -j (like čestitaju → čestitaj-), add -mo (čestitajmo).
- If the stem ends in any other consonant (like krenu → kren-), add -imo (krenimo).
| Crew, let's move forward! | Ekipo, krenimo naprijed! |
| Let's raise the glasses and congratulate them! | Podignimo čaše i čestitajmo im! |
| Let's sing and dance at this celebration! | Zapjevajmo i zaplešimo na ovoj proslavi! |
If the verb is reflexive, like radovati se (to rejoice), the pronoun se simply follows the imperative (raduju se → radujmo se).
| Let's rejoice, because that is a big celebration. | Radujmo se, jer to je velika proslava. |
