Questions & Answers about Ekipo, krenimo naprijed!
Why is it ekipo instead of the dictionary word ekipa?
Because you are addressing the group directly, you have to use the vocative case. For most feminine nouns that end in -a (like ekipa), the ending changes to -o when you are calling out to them.
How does the single word krenimo mean "let's move"?
In English, we use "let's" plus a verb. In Croatian, you express this by changing the verb itself into a first-person plural ("we") command. The ending -imo added to the verb stem does exactly this, turning "we move" into "let's move!"
How exactly is krenimo formed from the verb krenuti (to move/start)?
To find the stem for the imperative, take the third-person plural ("they") present tense form of the verb, which is krenu (they move). Drop the final vowel to get the stem kren-. Since the stem ends in a consonant, you add the ending -imo to make the "let's" command.
Is ekipa only used for a literal crew or sports team?
No, it is extremely flexible! While it does mean "crew" or "team," Croatians use ekipa all the time to address a group of friends, classmates, or colleagues. It works exactly like saying "guys," "folks," or "everybody" in English.
Is naprijed only used for physical movement?
