Feminine Plural Nouns
In Croatian, regular feminine nouns usually end in -a in their singular form. To make them plural, simply change the -a ending to -e.
For example, mačka (cat) becomes mačke (cats), and soba (room) becomes sobe (rooms).
| The cats are small. | Mačke su male. |
| Where are the cats? | Gdje su mačke? |
| The rooms are clean. | Sobe su čiste. |
Matching Adjectives
Adjectives must match the gender and number of the nouns they describe. When describing a feminine plural noun, regular adjectives also take an -e ending.
Notice how words like stare (old), nove (new), and čiste (clean) all end in -e to match their feminine nouns.
| The streets are old, and the buildings are new. | Ulice su stare, a zgrade su nove. |
| The new bags are here. | Nove torbe su ovdje. |
| The new books are interesting. | Nove knjige su zanimljive. |
Mixing Plurals
When combining different words in a sentence, pay attention to the gender of each noun to choose the correct adjective ending: use -i for masculine plurals and -e for feminine plurals.
| The schools are large, and the hotels are small. | Škole su velike, a hoteli su mali. |
| The women are here, and the students are there. | Žene su ovdje, a studenti su tamo. |
