Questions & Answers about Sobe su čiste.
How do we form the plural of the word for "room" here?
The singular word for room is soba, which is a regular feminine noun ending in -a. To make it plural in the nominative (subject) case, we simply drop the -a and add -e, giving us sobe (rooms).
Why does the word for clean (čiste) also end in "-e"?
In Croatian, adjectives must match the noun they describe in gender, number, and case. Because sobe is a feminine plural noun, the adjective čista (clean) changes its ending to match, becoming čiste.
Why is su (are) placed as the second word?
The word su is a "clitic" (a short, unstressed word) and grammatically belongs in the second position of a sentence. Even if you flipped the word order for emphasis and said Čiste su sobe, the word su would stay firmly in the number two spot.
