Expressions of disbelief (zar, zar ne)

When watching reality television, you will encounter shocking eliminations and unexpected twists. To express surprise or disbelief in Croatian, use the interrogative particle zar.

Expressing Disbelief

Place zar at the beginning of a yes/no question to add shock or doubt, similar to "really?" or "is it true that...?".

Are they really going to eliminate the best contestant?
Zar će izbaciti najboljeg natjecatelja?
Did he really say that the favorite will leave the show?
Zar je rekao da će favorit napustiti emisiju?
Do you really think that the voting is a simple scheme?
Zar mislite da je glasovanje obična spletka?

Pair zar with a negative verb to express surprise that something is not happening.

Doesn't the jury follow the audience's voting?
Zar žiri ne prati glasovanje publike?

Asking for Agreement

To ask for agreement, add , zar ne? (right? / isn't it?) to the end of your statement.

Every episode is full of twists, isn't it?
Svaka epizoda je puna preokreta, zar ne?
The jury will decide who goes to the finale, won't they?
Žiri će odlučiti tko ide u finale, zar ne?
You will eliminate her in this episode, won't you?
Izbacit ćete ju u ovoj epizodi, zar ne?

Like "right?", zar ne? is a fixed phrase that never changes form, regardless of the tense or subject of the main sentence.

You will leave the competition before the finale, won't you?
Napustit ćeš natjecanje prije finala, zar ne?
