Saying yes the Croatian way
Može — literally "it can" — is how Croatians agree to a suggestion: Idemo u kino? Može! It is the everyday yes to any plan or offer.
Smoothing the conversation
| formula | use |
|---|---|
| Nema problema. | no problem — agreeing to help |
| Nema veze. | never mind — after an apology or mishap |
| Samo trenutak. | just a moment — asking someone to wait |
| Samo malo! | excuse me — making way in a crowd, or politely interrupting |
| Evo. | here you are — handing something over |
| I'm sorry, I'm late. Never mind! | Žao mi je, kasnim. Nema veze! |
Enough and no time
Dosta mi je means I have had enough of something (with the genitive): Dosta mi je posla za danas. Nemam vremena — I have no time — uses the genitive of vrijeme.
Wishes
Dobar provod! (have fun), Puno sreće! (good luck) — and when something goes wrong, you will hear sranje (shit), which is rude but everywhere.
