Entering and exiting ('ući', 'izaći')

Entering and Exiting Spaces

To express the completed action of going into an enclosed space, use the perfective verb ući (to enter). The noun for an entrance is ulaz.

We can enter the building.
Možemo ući u zgradu.
The main entrance is there.
Tamo je glavni ulaz.

To express going out or exiting, use the verb izaći and the noun izlaz (exit). To specify going through an opening or passageway, use the preposition kroz followed by the accusative case.

We must go out through the main exit.
Moramo izaći kroz glavni izlaz.

Destination vs. Location

When talking about being in or moving into enclosed spaces—like a hallway (hodnik)—pay attention to the case used with the preposition u (in / into).

When you are simply located inside a space, use u with the locative case.

He is waiting for us in the hallway.
Čeka nas u hodniku.

When you are moving into a space as a destination, use u with the accusative case.

I do not want to go into the hallway.
Ne želim ući u hodnik.

For movement onto a surface (such as stairs, stepenice), use the preposition na with the accusative case.

Who went out onto the stairs?
Tko je izašao na stepenice?

Changing Levels and Leaving

To describe moving down to a lower level, such as into a basement (podrum), use the perfective verb sići (to go down).

We want to go down into the basement.
Želimo sići u podrum.

To describe going out of a specific enclosed space, use the preposition iz (out of / from) followed by the genitive case.

I did not want to come out of the basement.
Nisam htio izaći iz podruma.

You can apply these patterns of movement to any type of space, whether you are entering a new room (prostorija) or directing your gaze through a window.

They went into the new room.
Ušli su u novu prostoriju.
I looked through the window.
Gledao sam kroz prozor.
