Describing appearance (mršav, sijed, kovrčav)

Beyond tall and short

You can already say someone is visok, mlad or star. This lesson adds the words Croatian actually uses when describing a person's looks.

Build and figure

mršav is thin, skinny — the direct opposite of debeo: Moj brat je visok i mršav.

Hair

sijed describes grey hair — a person or the hair itself: Djed ima sijedu kosu. ćelav is bald: Naš stari susjed je ćelav. kovrčav is curly: Ona ima dugu kovrčavu kosu.

The face

obrve are the eyebrows (usually plural): Ima tamne obrve i dugu bradu. obraz is the cheek: Dijete ima crvene obraze od zime. Note the plural obrazi and the old genitive you met with ruku: pet prstiju, ali crvenih obraza.
