To compare size, quantity, or extent, use the correlative adjectives koliki and toliki.
As a pair (koliki..., toliki...), they mean "however big [X] is, that is how big [Y] will be" or "as much [X], that much [Y]."
Adjective Agreement
Like all adjectives, koliki and toliki must agree in gender, number, and case with the nouns they modify.
| However much money you invest, that is how big your profit will be. | Koliki novac uložite, toliki će biti vaš profit. |
Here, both adjectives are masculine, matching novac (money) and profit. If the nouns have different genders, each adjective adapts independently:
| However great the initial enthusiasm was, the disappointment is that great now. | Koliki je bio početni entuzijazam, toliko je sada razočaranje. |
Notice how koliki is masculine to match entuzijazam, while toliko is neuter to match razočaranje.
When both nouns share a gender, the adjective endings mirror each other:
| As much sacrifice, that much recognition. | Koliko odricanje, toliko i priznanje. |
| However big a job you complete, that is how big a bonus you can earn. | Koliki posao odradiš, toliki bonus možeš zaraditi. |
Using Toliki on Its Own
You can also use toliki independently to mean "that big" or "of such a great extent":
| That is why her disappointment was that big; she lost all enthusiasm. | Zato je njezino razočaranje bilo toliko; izgubila je sav entuzijazam. |
