Comparisons with than (nego)

In Croatian, you can compare things using od (followed by the Genitive case) or nego ("than").

While od requires the Genitive case, nego connects matching structures. The word or phrase after nego stays in the same grammatical case or form as the item it is being compared to.

Comparing Contexts and Time

Because nego doesn't force a specific noun case, it is useful for comparing adverbs and situations, such as "now" versus "before".

Currently it is harder to find a job than before.
Trenutno je teže naći posao nego nekada.
Their relationship is more complicated than before.
Njihov odnos je kompliciraniji nego nekada.

Comparing Nouns and Pronouns

When comparing two subjects, both sides of the comparison simply stay in the Nominative case.

His life is currently simpler than hers.
Njegov život je trenutno jednostavniji nego njezin.
Some domestic products are higher quality than foreign ones.
Neki domaći proizvodi su kvalitetniji nego strani.
This apartment is more affordable than that one in the center.
Ovaj stan je povoljniji nego onaj u centru.

Comparing Actions

Because nego connects matching structures, you can easily compare two actions by placing an infinitive verb on both sides of the comparison.

Working with him is more efficient than working alone.
Raditi s njim je učinkovitije nego raditi sam.
Fixing old cars is more cost-effective than buying new ones.
Popraviti stare automobile je isplativije nego kupiti nove.
Doing sports is more beneficial for health than just lying down.
Baviti se sportom je korisnije za zdravlje nego samo ležati.
