Bicycle Commute & Gear

Learn how to talk about riding your bicycle, navigating the bike paths, and handling minor repairs like patching a tire.

When commuting, it is important to stay safe on the cycling (biciklistički) path. Use your bell (zvono) to warn pedestrians and other cyclists.

Use the bell while you ride on the cycling path.
Koristi zvono dok voziš na biciklističkoj stazi.
There is a crowd on the cycling path, so I constantly use the bell.
Gužva je na biciklističkoj stazi, pa stalno koristim zvono.

Dealing with Flats

City streets can be unpredictable. If you puncture (probušiti) your tire, you will need to take out the inner tube (zračnica) to patch (zakrpati) the hole.

If you puncture the tire, you must change the inner tube.
Ako probušiš gumu, moraš promijeniti zračnicu.
When I find the hole, I will patch the inner tube.
Kada nađem rupu, zakrpat ću zračnicu.

Once the hole is fixed, grab your pump (pumpa) to inflate the tire again.

If the tire is empty, take the pump and pump it up.
Ako je guma prazna, uzmi pumpu i napumpaj ju.

Parking and Locking Up

When you arrive at your destination, you will need to park using the kickstand (nogar) and secure the bike with a lock (lokot). Notice that when you do something "with" an object (using it as a tool), Croatian uses the instrumental case. For a masculine noun like lokot, you add -om (lokotom).

Lock the bicycle with the lock when you arrive home.
Zaključaj bicikl lokotom kada stigneš kući.
Do not forget the lock if you leave the bicycle outside.
Nemoj zaboraviti lokot ako ostavljaš bicikl vani.

Other Useful Bike Parts

Knowing the parts of your bike makes maintenance easier. You might need to adjust your pedal (pedala) or clean the mudguard (blatobran) after a rainy ride.

Leave the bicycle on the kickstand while I clean the mudguard.
Ostavi bicikl na nogaru dok čistim blatobran.
While I was riding, I punctured the tire and broke the pedal.
Dok sam vozio, probušio sam gumu i slomio pedalu.
