Questions & Answers about لماذا تطلبون بيضا أو فاكهة فقط؟
The current lesson is about conjunctions like و (and). Why is أو (or) written as a separate word here?
Unlike the word for "and" (و), which always attaches directly to the beginning of the next word, the word for "or" (أو) is a standalone word. You write it with a space before and after it, just like you do in English!
Why is there an extra alif (ا) at the end of بيضا (eggs) but not at the end of فاكهة (fruit)?
Both words are the object of the verb (the things being ordered). In formal Arabic, these objects get an "-an" sound added to the end. For most words, like بيض, we must add an alif to hold this sound, making it بيضا. However, words ending in a taa marboota (ة), like فاكهة, do not need an extra alif added to them.
How can I tell that تطلبون means "you (plural) order"?
In the present tense, the تـ at the beginning is the marker for "you". The ـون (-oon) suffix at the end makes it plural. Together, they show that you are addressing a group of people (specifically, a group of men or a mixed-gender group).
Why is فقط (only) at the very end of the sentence?
In Arabic, فقط almost always comes after the word or phrase it modifies. While in English we put it before the phrase and say "only eggs or fruit", Arabic literally phrases it as "eggs or fruit only".
