Questions & Answers about هل يجلس الطبيب في المستشفى؟
How do we know يجلس means 'he sits' rather than 'I sit' or 'she sits'?
The present tense verb starts with the prefix يـ, which is the marker for 'he'. If it were 'she sits', it would start with the prefix تـ as in تجلس. For 'I sit', it would start with an alif as in أجلس.
Why does the verb يجلس come before the subject الطبيب?
In Arabic, it is standard for the verb to come before the subject. While it is grammatically possible to put the subject first, starting with the verb like in this sentence is the most common and natural word order.
Why does the word for hospital, المستشفى, end with a letter that looks like ي without dots?
That letter is called an alif maqsura (ى). It is pronounced exactly like a regular, tall alif, making a long 'aa' sound at the end of the word. Some Arabic words simply use this shape at the end instead of the standard alif.
I know ال means 'the', but why is the 'L' sound skipped when pronouncing الطبيب?
The word طبيب starts with a sun letter (ط). When you add ال to a word starting with a sun letter, the 'L' sound is skipped and the first letter of the word is doubled instead. This makes it flow easier when speaking.
