The First Aid Kit

Accidents happen, so it is essential to be prepared. In this lesson, you will learn practical vocabulary for a first aid kit to handle minor injuries.

Wounds and Bandages

Treating a wound (جرح) often requires wrapping (لف) it with a bandage (ضمادة).

When describing the tool or material used to perform an action, you will often use the preposition بِـ (with / by means of). This one-letter preposition attaches directly to the front of the noun it modifies, such as بضمادة (with a bandage).

Antiseptics and Bleeding

To ensure a wound heals properly and to stop bleeding (نزيف), you must clean it with an antiseptic (مطهر).

When describing an event in the past, you can place the particle قد directly before a past-tense verb. This emphasizes that the action has "already" been completed or is an established fact.

Tweezers and Ointments

A first aid kit is not complete without sterile (معقم) tweezers (ملقط) for removing debris, or an ointment (مرهم) to soothe the skin.

To explain the purpose behind an action, use the conjunction كي (in order to / so that). It is always followed by a present-tense verb.

Pain Relief for Injuries

If you have sustained an injury (إصابة), you might need a painkiller (مسكن) for relief.

To give a reason for your action, use لأن (because). In Arabic, لأن is typically followed immediately by a noun or an attached pronoun suffix.
