Not, un-
To make an adjective negative, put غير(ghayr) in front of it, like English un- or not. غير and the adjective form an idafa, so the adjective is genitive in careful speech: غيرُ مهمٍّ.
| This is unimportant. | هذا غير مهم.hâdhâ ghayru muhimmin |
| This is not true. | هذا غير صحيح.hâdhâ ghayru saḥîḥ |
| The street is not crowded now. | الشارع غير مزدحم الآن.ash-shâri'u ghayru muzdaḥimin al-âna |
Compare ليس, which negates a whole sentence: الطعام ليس لذيذا the food is not tasty and الطعام غير لذيذ say the same thing, but only غير can sit inside a phrase: قرار غير رسمي an unofficial decision.
Other than
Before a noun, غير means other than, except, close to إلا:
| I eat everything other than meat. | أنا آكل كل شيء غير اللحم.ana âkulu kulla shay'in ghayra l-lahmi. |
| Do you have a shirt other than this one? | هل عندك قميص غير هذا؟hal indaka qamiisun ghayru hâdhâ? |
Do not confuse it with غيّر to change: the same letters, a different word.
