Form VIII assimilated roots (افتعل)

Building a Team Vision

Before we look at the new grammar, let's introduce some key vocabulary for team building and collaboration.

Form VIII Assimilated Roots

Form VIII verbs generally follow the pattern افتعل, which inserts the letter ت after the first root letter. However, a special spelling change occurs when the verb's root starts with the letter و.

Take the root for agreement: و - ف - ق. If we followed the standard Form VIII pattern, the verb would be اوتفق. Because it is awkward to pronounce و immediately followed by ت, the و completely merges into the ت.

This morphological assimilation creates a doubled ت, which is written with a shadda (ـتّـ). The resulting verb is اتّفق.

Common Assimilated Verbs

This assimilation happens predictably with any root starting with و when it enters Form VIII. Notice the doubled ت in these common verbs related to unity and clarity:

  • From the root و - ض - ح we get اتضح (to become clear).
  • From the root و - ح - د we get اتحد (to unite).

This pattern remains consistent across different tenses and forms, always keeping the doubled ت.
