First, then, in the end (أولا، ثم، في النهاية)

Putting things in order

To list points, number them with أولا(awwalan) (first) and ثانيا(thâniyan) (second); they are the ordinals أول and ثاني with the adverb ending ـاً.

Telling a story

A story starts ذات يوم(dhâta yawmin) or في يوم من الأيام(fi yawmin mina l-ayyâm) (one day). It moves on with ثم (then) and بعد ذلك (after that), and the next day is في اليوم التالي(at-tâlî). It ends في النهاية(fi n-nihâyah) (in the end) or with أخيرا (finally). في البداية(fil bidâyah) is at first, often set against what happened later.

Later, last

في وقت لاحق(fī waqtin lâhiqin) is later (on). أخير(akhîr) (last, final) is an adjective that follows its noun: اليوم الأخير the last day.
