Vietnamese ra begins with an outward path: someone exits a bounded place, an object is taken out, or something emerges into view. From that spatial image come productive result meanings such as “find out,” “recognize,” “think up,” “say aloud,” and “produce.” In each case, something becomes accessible, perceptible, or established.
English hides these relations under many unrelated verbs and particles. Vietnamese keeps ra unchanged and lets its position and partner predicate identify the construction. This page maps those constructions rather than inventing conjugations. Inward motion with vào belongs to the next dedicated reference.
Decide from the construction
| Frame | Contribution of ra | Typical combination |
|---|---|---|
| subject + ra (+ place) | go/come out | ra ngoài, ra sân |
| verb + ra | outward direction or exposure | đi ra, lấy ra, kéo ra |
| verb + ra + object/result | discover, devise, produce | tìm ra lỗi, nghĩ ra cách |
| state + ra | become more visibly in that state | sáng ra, khỏe ra |
| ra + product/decision | bring into public or usable existence | ra mắt, ra thông báo |
| fixed expression | lexicalized inference or origin | hóa ra, sinh ra |
Leaving an enclosure or moving outward
As the main motion predicate, ra means to go or come out toward an exterior or open area. Common goals include ra ngoài “go outside,” ra sân “go out into the yard,” ra đường “go out onto the street,” and ra biển “go out to sea.” Vietnamese normally does not need a separate equivalent of English to before the goal.
Trời mát rồi, mình ra ngoài đi dạo một lát nhé.
It’s cool out now; let’s go outside for a short walk.
Nghe tiếng chuông, cả lớp chạy ra hành lang xem có chuyện gì.
Hearing the bell, the whole class ran out into the corridor to see what was happening.
After another motion verb, ra specifies the outward path: đi ra “walk/go out,” chạy ra “run out,” bước ra “step out.” With handling verbs it marks removal from a container or bounded location: lấy ra “take out,” kéo ra “pull out,” rút ra “withdraw/extract.”
Bạn lấy hộp sữa ra khỏi tủ lạnh giúp tôi nhé.
Please take the carton of milk out of the refrigerator for me.
The source can be introduced with khỏi when it matters: ra khỏi phòng “out of the room.” Bare ra phòng is not a general replacement for that pattern; ra + goal normally names the exterior area reached, while ra khỏi + source explicitly names what is left.
Emergence into perception: finding and recognizing
In combinations such as tìm ra “find/discover,” nhận ra “recognize/realize,” and phát hiện ra “discover,” ra presents an answer or fact as emerging from hiddenness into awareness. The object or clause generally follows the combination.
Cuối cùng kỹ thuật viên cũng tìm ra nguyên nhân của lỗi.
The technician finally found the cause of the error.
Đọc lại tin nhắn, tôi mới nhận ra mình đã hiểu nhầm.
When I reread the message, I finally realized that I had misunderstood.
Tìm alone can mean search for or find, depending on context; tìm ra strongly foregrounds successful discovery. Likewise, nhận alone has other meanings, but nhận ra is the conventional recognition predicate. English learners should acquire the combination as one frame rather than translate out independently.
Ideas, speech, products, and results
Nghĩ ra means devise or think of an idea; nói ra means say something aloud or make it explicit; viết ra can mean write something out so it is visible; làm ra means make or produce, often emphasizing the achieved product. Here ra converts an internal, implicit, or unrealized possibility into an available result.
Chúng ta phải nghĩ ra một cách giải quyết ít tốn kém hơn.
We need to come up with a less expensive solution.
Nếu có điều gì không hài lòng thì bạn cứ nói ra.
If there’s anything you’re unhappy about, go ahead and say it.
Xưởng nhỏ này làm ra hơn hai trăm sản phẩm mỗi ngày.
This small workshop produces more than two hundred items a day.
Institutional and media language uses collocations such as ra thông báo “issue an announcement,” ra quyết định “issue/make a decision,” and ra mắt “launch/make a debut.” These are conventional combinations, not proof that ra can translate every English issue or launch.
Công ty vừa ra thông báo về lịch nghỉ Tết.
The company has just issued an announcement about the Lunar New Year holiday schedule. (formal)
Change becoming visible
After some state predicates, ra marks a change that becomes perceptible: sáng ra “become brighter,” rộng ra “become wider,” khỏe ra “get better/healthier.” It often suggests an observable movement away from a previous state. This construction is productive but not unlimited; for many changes Vietnamese prefers hơn, lên, đi, or a lexical verb.
Uống thuốc hai hôm, bé đã khỏe ra nhiều.
After taking the medicine for two days, the child has become much better.
Context matters with sáng ra: after a subject it can describe something becoming brighter, but clause-initial sáng ra commonly means “in the morning” or “when morning comes.” The surrounding frame, not the two words alone, selects the reading.
Hóa ra is a fixed discourse expression meaning “it turns out” or “so actually.” Its modern interpretation is not computed word by word each time.
Hóa ra hai người đã quen nhau từ hồi đại học.
It turns out the two of them have known each other since university.
Aspect, negation, questions, and the five-way contrast
With literal motion, markers precede ra: đã ra ngoài, đang ra sân, sẽ ra biển, chưa ra khỏi nhà. In result combinations, the marker precedes the whole predicate: đã tìm ra, chưa nghĩ ra. A potential form such as không tìm ra can mean “cannot find/figure out” in context, while chưa tìm ra means the successful result has not been reached yet.
Tôi vẫn chưa nghĩ ra nên tặng anh ấy món gì.
I still haven’t figured out what to give him.
Bạn có nhận ra người đang đứng cạnh cửa không?
Do you recognize the person standing by the door?
| Function | Vietnamese | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| affirmative | Nam ra sân. | Nam goes out into the yard. |
| negative | Nam không ra sân. | Nam does not go out into the yard. |
| question | Nam ra ngoài chưa? | Has Nam gone outside yet? |
| aspect-marked | Nam đang đi ra cổng. | Nam is walking out toward the gate. |
| idiomatic collocation | Nam đã nghĩ ra một cách hay. | Nam has come up with a good solution. |
A short exchange: search versus successful discovery
— Cậu tìm chìa khóa từ sáng à? — Ừ, mình tìm mãi mới ra. Hóa ra nó nằm trong túi áo khoác.
— Have you been looking for the key since this morning? — Yes, I searched forever before finding it. It turns out it was in my coat pocket.
The first tìm describes the search activity. Tìm mãi mới ra presents the eventual emergence of the answer, with the object understood from context. Hóa ra then introduces the surprising fact. The presence of ra changes the event from an open-ended search into a discovered result.
Register and regional notes
The core uses of ra are neutral and nationwide. Geographic motion can reflect a culturally established viewpoint: speakers often say ra Bắc “go north” and may use ra Hà Nội from places conceived as south of or outside the capital. Such usage is conventional and viewpoint-sensitive, not a universal compass rule. In formal prose, collocations such as đưa ra đề xuất “put forward a proposal” and rút ra kết luận “draw a conclusion” are frequent; label them (formal/academic) when their surrounding register calls for it.
Common Mistakes
1. Translating every English out with ra. English phrasal verbs have lexical meanings; “the light went out” uses tắt, not motion ra.
❌ Đèn ra lúc nửa đêm.
Incorrect — ra cannot translate the particle in ‘the light went out.’
✅ Đèn tắt lúc nửa đêm.
The light went out at midnight.
2. Omitting khỏi when naming the source boundary. Ra khỏi + place explicitly means exit that place.
❌ Cô ấy bước ra văn phòng mà không nói gì.
Misleading for ‘stepped out of the office’ — this can sound as though the office is the outward goal.
✅ Cô ấy bước ra khỏi văn phòng mà không nói gì.
She stepped out of the office without saying anything.
3. Treating tìm as always resultative. Add ra when successful discovery is the point.
❌ Sau ba giờ, chúng tôi tìm nguyên nhân của sự cố.
Incomplete for the intended achieved result ‘found the cause’; bare tìm foregrounds searching and is ambiguous here.
✅ Sau ba giờ, chúng tôi đã tìm ra nguyên nhân của sự cố.
After three hours, we found the cause of the incident.
4. Copying English come out with the wrong word order. The motion predicate precedes the outward directional complement.
❌ Anh ấy ra đi phòng họp.
Incorrect order for ‘walked out of the meeting room.’
✅ Anh ấy đi ra khỏi phòng họp.
He walked out of the meeting room.
Key Takeaways
- Literal ra traces motion from an inside or bounded region toward an outside.
- In tìm ra, nhận ra, nghĩ ra, a fact, answer, or idea emerges into accessibility.
- Aspect and negation apply to the whole construction: đã tìm ra, chưa nghĩ ra.
- English out does not license ra automatically; learn Vietnamese predicate combinations and their objects.
