Thì as a Topic Marker

Topic-marking thì places a visible boundary between a topic and the comment made about it: TOPIC + thì + COMMENT. It is especially natural when comparing alternatives, switching domains, or making the limits of a claim explicit. It is not a general translation of English is, and it is not required after every topic.

The core pattern

Start from neutral subject–verb–object order:

Tôi đọc sách.

I read books / I am reading a book.

When a known object becomes the discourse topic, thì can announce that the following clause applies to that object:

Món này thì tôi ăn rồi.

As for this dish, I’ve already tried it.

The noun phrase before thì is not the subject of ăn. Tôi remains the subject inside the comment. The object position after ăn is understood from the topic. This is information structure, not free object movement.

ContextUse of topic-marking thìEffect
neutral new statementusually omitplain SVO assertion
explicit contraststrongly naturalselects one member of a contrast set
return to a known matternaturalresets the domain of discussion
conditional sequencedifferent construction“if/when X, then Y” rather than a nominal topic
copular identificationdo not substitute for làthì marks discourse structure, not identity
💡
Translate topic-marking thì mentally as a boundary—“as for…”—not as a verb. The Vietnamese sentence may need no overt English equivalent at all.

Contrast is the clearest environment

With two established alternatives, thì assigns a separate comment to one or both. Còn often introduces the second contrasting topic.

Cuốn này thì tôi đọc rồi, còn cuốn kia thì chưa.

This one I’ve read; the other one I haven’t.

Tôi thì thích đi sớm, còn Nam thì muốn ở lại.

I prefer leaving early, whereas Nam wants to stay.

The first example omits đọc after the second thì because the contrast makes it recoverable. In the second, tôi and Nam are both grammatical subjects and contrastive topics. Topic and subject happen to coincide there.

Thì can also narrow a broad generalization. The speaker marks one domain as the part for which the comment is valid.

Giá cả thì tôi thấy ổn, nhưng vị trí hơi xa.

As for the price, I think it’s fine, but the location is a bit far.

Nói thì dễ, làm mới khó.

Talking is easy; actually doing it is hard.

In the second sentence, the paired topics nói and làm contrast activities. Mới focuses the second judgment: doing, by contrast, is what is genuinely difficult.

Topics of different sizes

A topic before thì can be a noun phrase, a time or place frame, an activity, or a larger proposition. What matters is that the following material makes a coherent comment about that domain.

Hôm qua thì tôi ở nhà cả ngày.

Yesterday, I stayed home all day. (contrasting yesterday with another time)

Ở Hà Nội thì đi xe máy khá tiện.

In Hanoi, getting around by motorbike is quite convenient.

Còn chuyện có nên đổi việc hay không thì tôi chưa quyết định.

As for whether I should change jobs, I haven’t decided yet.

Compare plain scene setting:

Hôm kia tôi mới gặp chị ấy.

I only met her the day before yesterday.

Hôm qua thì tôi gặp anh ấy, còn hôm nay thì không.

Yesterday I met him, but today I didn’t.

Without thì, hôm qua simply locates the event. With thì, it is explicitly contrasted with hôm nay. That difference shows why inserting thì after every initial time expression sounds overmarked.

Topic marking, scope, and focus particles

Thì sets the domain of the whole following comment; particles inside that comment mark narrower scope. Their position matters.

Món này thì chỉ có Mai ăn.

As for this dish, only Mai eats it.

Món này thì Mai chỉ ăn một ít.

As for this dish, Mai eats only a little.

In the first, chỉ có Mai restricts the eater. In the second, chỉ ăn một ít restricts the amount. Likewise, cũng can mark an additive subject inside the comment:

Chuyện đó thì ai cũng biết.

As for that matter, everyone knows.

The quantifier frame ai cũng stays together. The topic does not replace ai as the subject. Compare neutral Ai cũng biết “Everyone knows,” which needs no overt topic.

Topic-marker thì versus other thì constructions

Vietnamese also uses thì in conditional and temporal correlations, commonly after nếu “if” or a when-clause. The forms are historically and discourse-functionally related, but learners should analyze the full construction rather than labeling every thì a nominal topic marker.

Nếu mai trời mưa thì mình ở nhà.

If it rains tomorrow, we’ll stay home.

Khi nào xong thì gọi cho tôi nhé.

Call me when you’re finished.

Here thì introduces the consequence or following event. By contrast, cuốn sách này thì... sets a nominal aboutness domain. Topic-marking thì also differs from là, which identifies or classifies:

Lan là bác sĩ.

Lan is a doctor.

Lan thì làm ở bệnh viện này.

As for Lan, she works at this hospital.

Replacing là with thì would not preserve the meaning “is a doctor.”

A natural exchange

— Ai cũng biết chuyện đổi lịch chưa? — Chị Lan thì biết rồi. Còn anh Minh thì tôi chưa báo.

— Does everyone know about the schedule change yet? — Ms Lan knows already. As for Mr Minh, I haven’t informed him yet.

The first chị Lan thì contrasts Lan with other possible knowers; the subject and topic coincide. In anh Minh thì tôi chưa báo, Minh is the person about whom the speaker comments, while tôi is the grammatical subject. Context supplies both the understood recipient and the schedule-change message. The same surface marker supports two structures because the semantic relation between topic and comment is different.

This is why the next page treats left-dislocated noun phrases separately. It asks whether and how the topic connects to a position inside the comment; this page focuses on what thì contributes as an overt boundary.

💡
Thì is clearest when listeners could ask “What about X?” or compare X with Y. If there is no accessible domain or contrast, neutral SVO is usually more natural.

Register and omission

Topic-marking thì is common in everyday speech (neutral and informal) and also appears in careful prose. Formal administrative writing may prefer đối với “with regard to” or về “regarding” when the relation must be explicit. Omitting thì is possible when intonation and context establish the topic, but omission may reduce contrast.

Về thời hạn thì chúng tôi có thể linh động.

Regarding the deadline, we can be flexible.

Về thời hạn, chúng tôi có thể linh động.

Regarding the deadline, we can be flexible. (more compact formal packaging)

Do not assume that more particles make a sentence more authentically Vietnamese. Thì has a discourse job, and overuse blurs the contrasts it is meant to highlight.

Common Mistakes

Using thì as the copula “be”

❌ Lan thì bác sĩ.

Incorrect for ‘Lan is a doctor’ — thì does not classify Lan.

✅ Lan là bác sĩ.

Lan is a doctor.

Use là for identity or classification; use thì before a comment about a topical Lan.

Marking every initial time phrase

❌ Hôm qua thì tôi mới gặp cô giáo ấy.

Overmarked in a neutral answer about when I met that teacher; thì suggests a contrast not supplied by the context.

✅ Hôm qua tôi mới gặp cô giáo ấy.

I only met that teacher yesterday.

Add thì only if yesterday is contrasted with another time or established as the discussion domain.

Misreading the topic as the subject

❌ Cuốn truyện này thì đọc tôi rồi.

Incorrect — the real subject and verb have been reversed.

✅ Cuốn truyện này thì tôi đọc rồi.

As for this story, I’ve already read it.

Inside the comment, tôi đọc retains normal subject–verb order.

Fronting a phrase without a coherent comment

❌ Một người lạ thì trời đang mưa.

Incoherent — ‘it is raining’ is not a relevant comment about an unknown stranger.

✅ Còn người lạ thì tôi chưa chắc có nên tin hay không.

As for strangers, I’m not sure whether to trust them.

The repaired comment has a recoverable aboutness relation to the topic.

Key Takeaways

  • Topic-marking thì overtly separates an accessible topic from its comment.
  • It is especially natural in contrasts, domain shifts, and claims whose scope needs delimiting.
  • The topic can coincide with the subject, but it can also correspond to an object or broader domain.
  • Thì is not là, and conditional nếu...thì must be analyzed as its own construction.
  • Vietnamese discourse permits flexible packaging, but thì does not license arbitrary fronting or arbitrary word order inside the comment.
