Vietnamese về organizes several ideas around an orientation back toward a home, an origin, or a previously relevant point. As an independent motion predicate it means “return,” “go home,” or “head back”; after another verb it gives that action a returning or homeward direction. In a different but related construction, về + topic introduces what speech, thought, or writing is about.
English therefore translates về with return, go home, back, to, or about. Those glosses are not interchangeable instructions. A useful reference maps the frames in which về occurs; there is no conjugation table because về itself never changes for person or tense. The outward/resultative uses of ra are treated on their dedicated page.

Returning, going home, and heading back
Used as the main predicate, về presents motion toward home, an origin, or a place understood as the relevant base. The destination can be omitted when the context supplies it. Tôi về đây does not mean “I return here”; in ordinary conversation it is a leave-taking formula meaning “I’m heading off now.”
Tối nay tôi về nhà muộn vì phải họp thêm một tiếng.
I’m going home late tonight because I have to stay in a meeting for another hour.
Tết này cả nhà tôi về quê thăm ông bà.
This Lunar New Year, my whole family is returning to our hometown to visit the grandparents.
Về nhà is the normal homeward expression. Like English go home, it needs no general location marker corresponding to to. Về quê means return or go to one’s home region; về nước means return to one’s country. Whether English chooses go or come depends on viewpoint, but Vietnamese keeps the return-oriented predicate.
Mình về đây, mai gặp lại nhé.
I’m heading off now; see you tomorrow.
The pair đi ... về can frame a round trip: đi Hà Nội về “return from a trip to Hanoi” in the right context, or đi chợ về “come back from the market.” This is not simply two competing words for “go.” Đi opens the trip or identifies the activity; về closes it by returning to the base.
Mẹ đi chợ về rồi, đang nấu cơm trong bếp.
Mom is back from the market and is cooking in the kitchen.
Về after another verb: back toward a base
After a transport or transfer verb, về adds a returning or homeward path. Common combinations include mang về “bring/take back,” đem về “bring back,” gửi về “send back/home,” lấy về “retrieve and bring back,” and chạy về “run back.” The first predicate names the action; về identifies the direction or resulting location.
Bạn nhớ mang hợp đồng về để tối nay mình cùng xem nhé.
Remember to bring the contract home so we can look at it together tonight.
Mỗi tháng anh ấy gửi một phần lương về cho bố mẹ.
Every month he sends part of his salary home to his parents.
Word order matters. Gửi quà về quê means “send gifts back to the hometown”: the transferred object follows gửi, and the homeward goal follows về. English-speaking learners sometimes try to put về before the object merely because English says send back the gift. Vietnamese does not copy the position of English back mechanically.
Quay về and trở về make the return explicit. Both are neutral; trở về is especially common in narrative and careful prose, but it is not restricted to formal writing. They can also describe a return to a condition or subject.
Sau mười năm ở nước ngoài, chị ấy quyết định trở về Việt Nam.
After ten years abroad, she decided to return to Vietnam.
Về as “about” or “concerning”
After predicates of speaking, asking, thinking, learning, and writing, về + noun phrase marks subject matter: nói về “talk about,” hỏi về “ask about,” nghĩ về “think about,” viết về “write about.” It also modifies nouns: thông tin về chuyến bay “information about the flight,” kiến thức về tài chính “knowledge of finance.”
Bài báo này nói về những thay đổi trên thị trường lao động.
This article is about changes in the labor market.
Tôi muốn hỏi thêm về chính sách đổi vé.
I’d like to ask more about the ticket-change policy.
This topic use does not license every English object pattern. English discuss a problem normally corresponds to thảo luận về một vấn đề or thảo luận một vấn đề, depending on style and structure; English explain something to someone requires a recipient frame such as giải thích điều đó cho ai, not về ai.
At the beginning of a clause, về + domain can set a topic: Về thời gian thì tôi rảnh “As for time, I’m free.” The particle thì makes the topic-comment boundary overt and often suggests a contrast with another domain.
Về địa điểm thì tôi đồng ý, nhưng mình vẫn phải bàn lại ngân sách.
As for the location, I agree, but we still need to discuss the budget again.
Aspect, negation, questions, and collocations
Aspect and time markers precede unchanged về: đã về “returned/has returned,” đang về “is on the way back,” sẽ về “will return,” and chưa về “has not returned yet.” Final rồi often announces that a return has occurred. Ordinary negation is không về.
Bố đang về, khoảng mười phút nữa sẽ tới.
Dad is on his way home; he’ll arrive in about ten minutes.
Chị Lan chưa về à? Tôi tưởng chị ấy tan làm lúc năm giờ.
Lan isn’t back yet? I thought she finished work at five.
Questions include về đâu? “return/go where?”, khi nào về? “when will [you] be back?”, and có về ... không?. With the topic use, the question word follows về: về chuyện gì? “about what matter?”
A minimal five-way contrast
| Function | Vietnamese | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| affirmative | Mai về quê cuối tuần này. | Mai is going back to her hometown this weekend. |
| negative | Mai không về quê cuối tuần này. | Mai is not going back this weekend. |
| question | Cuối tuần này Mai có về quê không? | Is Mai going back this weekend? |
| aspect-marked | Mai đã về quê rồi. | Mai has already gone back. |
| idiomatic collocation | Mình nói về việc đó sau nhé. | Let’s talk about that later. |
A short dialogue: motion or subject matter?
— Cậu đang về nhà à? — Ừ, mình về lấy máy tính. Tối nay nhóm mình họp về kế hoạch mới mà.
— Are you heading home? — Yes, I’m going back to get my laptop. Our group is meeting about the new plan tonight, remember.
The first two instances trace homeward motion. In họp về kế hoạch mới, however, về introduces the meeting’s topic. Translating every instance merely as back would miss the grammatical frame that changes the interpretation.
Register and regional notes
The core motion and topic uses are neutral and nationwide. Hồi can mean “return” in southern conversation in combinations such as đi rồi hồi lại, but it does not replace về across all frames; learners can safely use standard về everywhere. In formal administrative prose, về việc + clause/noun phrase frequently means “regarding,” while conversation often chooses a shorter về chuyện.... Label the construction by context rather than treating one form as a conjugated variant.
Common Mistakes
1. Adding ở after về to mark a destination. Ở describes location or residence; a homeward goal normally follows về directly.
❌ Tôi về ở nhà lúc sáu giờ.
Incorrect for ‘I go home at six’ — ở changes the structure toward residing or staying at home.
✅ Tôi về nhà lúc sáu giờ.
I go home at six.
2. Copying the English position of back. Directional về normally follows the transferred object in this frame.
❌ Tôi mang trở lại tài liệu cho bạn.
Unnatural calque of English ‘bring back the documents’ — trở lại does not function as a freely movable English-style particle here.
✅ Tôi mang tài liệu về cho bạn.
I’ll bring the documents back for you.
3. Using về for every English to. Infinitival to does not express return direction.
❌ Tôi muốn về học tiếng Việt.
Incorrect if the intended meaning is simply ‘I want to study Vietnamese’; this says the speaker wants to return somewhere to study.
✅ Tôi muốn học tiếng Việt.
I want to study Vietnamese.
4. Omitting về in a topic frame where English has a direct object. With hỏi meaning “ask about a matter,” về often introduces that matter.
❌ Tôi muốn hỏi chính sách đổi vé.
Incomplete or marked for the intended neutral meaning ‘ask about the ticket-change policy.’
✅ Tôi muốn hỏi về chính sách đổi vé.
I want to ask about the ticket-change policy.
Key Takeaways
- Về profiles a return or homeward orientation, either alone or after another predicate.
- Về + topic marks subject matter and must be distinguished from directional về.
- Aspect markers and negation surround an unchanged predicate: đang về, chưa về, không về.
- Learn whole frames such as về nhà, mang đồ về, and nói về chuyện đó, not a single English gloss.
